Abstract

Addition of 10 wt-% Al/CuO and 5 wt-% Al/PTFE significantly sensitizes the Al/KIO4 thermite. The energetic performance of this micron-sized blend approached the performance of nanothermite systems without the processing problems associated with the latter. The ignition temperature was significantly lower than that reported for the nano-Al/KIO4 (about 470°C) and flame front speeds approached 1 km·s−1. Exothermic decomposition products that facilitate removal of the protective oxide surface layer on the aluminum are responsible for the performance enhancement. The reduced ignition temperature is attributed to a change from the gas-solid mechanism, operative in Al/KIO4, to a condensed phase mechanism.
