Abstract

A carbon nanotubes (CNT)/hematite (Fe2O3) nanocomposite has been successfully prepared by homogeneous precipitation of Fe2O3 on a CNT surface followed by calcination. The morphology was studied by transmission electron microscopy and the compositional analysis was demonstrated by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. When evaluated as an electrode material, it has shown high specific capacitance with excellent cyclic stability. The optimum mass loading of nanosized Fe2O3 affirms the superior electrochemical performance. The CNT/Fe2O3-2 sample has shown a better result compared to CNT/Fe2O3-1 and CNT/Fe2O3-3 samples, with a high specific capacitance of 492 F g−1 and good cycle stability with the maintenance of about 77% original capacitance after 1000 charge/discharge cycles. These results indicate that CNT/Fe2O3-2 can be used as a promising high-performance electrode material for energy storage applications.
