Abstract

A method for the preparation of stable film-forming polyure thane emulsions from polyalkylene glycols and toluene diisocyanate is described. The chain extension reaction between prepolymer and water is controlled by the presence in the aqueous phase of a polycarboxylic emul sifier-stabiliser in its free acid form. The method permits the preparation of polyurethane emulsions which have an improved balance of mechanical stability, film-forming properties and film physical properties.
