Abstract

Abstract The paper presents the results of the study on the relations existing between the Sarno Baths and the area located right in front of its facade. This liminal area had so far received little attention. Still, some hypotheses, which have been proposed on its morphology and use before the 79 AD volcanic event needed to be tested. This has been achieved through new stratigraphic excavations, undertaken in 2016 within the framework of project MACH – Pompeii, an articulated programme of investigations aiming to a global approach to the Sarno Baths and its surroundings. The existence of a steep slope, employed as a dumping area, is documented and discussed in relation to the use of the building. The stratigraphic study was corroborated by micromorphological analyses of the 79 AD pyroclastic deposits.
