CHARACTERIZATION OF SHEAR COAXIAL INJECTION IN SUPERCRITICAL CONDITIONS BYMORPHOLOGICAL AND VELOCIMETRIC ANALYSIS
Source abstract
Abstract
High-pressure complexifies considerably the physics of liquid injection, particularly when exceeding the thermodynamical critical point. These phenomena are all the more complicated in multispecies cases, for which the governing mechanisms are not well understood. Moreover, building a fully controlled setup able to achieve and maintain high-pressure and high-temperature conditions while collecting data within such extreme conditions remains highly challenging, which induces a lack of quantitative experimental results in the literature. To reduce this gap, a multiple-frame diffuse background illumination (DBI) setup is applied to visualize a shear coaxial injector evolving at sub-, trans-, and supercritical conditions. The resulting images are then post-processed to obtain image correlation velocimetry (ICV). The injection consists of an ethane inner jet assisted by a gaseous nitrogen annular flow. Ambient pressure, ambient and outer temperature, inner jet mass flowrate, and momentum flux ratio are systematically varied. High-speed images and time-averaged velocity fields and profiles are obtained for a large set of experimental cases (420). Results show important morphology and velocity variations and a clear dependence on pressure and temperature, which might be explained by transcritical effects.
