Abstract

Nanolaminated structure design is one of the effective ways to tailor strain delocalization in metal matrix composites (MMCs), but insufficient strain hardening limits the higher strength and ductility synergy. Herein, the heterogeneous nanolaminated graphene nanosheet/Al-Cu-Mg composites were fabricated through a powder assembly and alloying approach, with coarse-grained layers introduced in the nanolaminated structure to significantly improve the strain hardening. This study focuses on the heterostructure formation and evolution mechanism, revealing the role of graphene nanosheet in thermal stabilization. Compared with ultrafine-grained composite, tensile strength (∼633 MPa) and elongation (∼13.3 %) increase by ∼5 % and ∼90 % respectively in heterogeneous nanolaminated composite, and heterogeneous deformation induced stress is found to be a key factor for the superior mechanical properties. This study provides a controllable approach for the complementary advantages of the nanolaminated and heterogeneous materials.
