Physio-chemical surface treatment of light-weight expanded clay aggregates on the bonding characteristics and micro-structural interactions of light-weight concrete
Source abstract
Abstract
From the thorough review of previous studies, it can be observed that using traditional lightweight aggregates (LWAs) such as expanded clay, shale, etc. in their original form for concrete production could result in poor bond characteristics and tensile strength. Hence, the current study proposes different treatment methods for lightweight expanded clay aggregates (LECA) to improve bond properties. Furthermore, the use of natural flax fibres could aid in maintaining structural integrity and confine the formation of cracks. The LECA was pre-treated with cement slurry, sodium silicate and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to improve its surface roughness. The outcomes of LECA-based LWA concrete (LWAC) with and without different pre-treatment methods and with different fibre volume fractions were contrasted. Experimental results indicate that the deployment of various treatment methods for LECA could increase the density of the aggregate due to the filling material in them. Moreover, the use of cement slurry treatment of LECA along with 2% flax fibre the highest compressive and tensile strength of 20.9 and 3.9 N/mm2, respectively.
