Comparison of metal flow in un-lubricated direct and indirect extrusion of aluminium alloys

Abstract

The main differences between metal flow in indirect and direct extrusion are described on basis of information achieved from modern FE-simulation coupled with experiments using internal grid patterns inside the metal. It is shown that deformation inside the extrusion is indeed different in the two cases. The well-known dead zone present ahead of the die in the direct process, for instance, is replaced by an intensive shear zone in indirect extrusion. The implications the differences have on the total deformations inside the extruded rod are also discussed.
