Abstract

The paper focuses on the effect of fiber breakage on the overall electrical conductivity of IM7 carbon fiber strands used to manufacture composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPV). The goal is to demonstrate the feasibility of performing resistance measurements in bare carbon fiber strands and identify a correlation between the percentage of surviving filaments, local changes in resistance measurements, and strength reduction. A simple model relating fracture load of a single strand to change in the electrical resistance is proposed and experimentally verified. The methodology can be used as a tool for rapid evaluation of composite overwrapped pressure vessels to predict stress rupture.
