A novel notch mechanics-based fatigue assessment of additively manufactured lattice structures from aluminium A205
Source abstract
Abstract
This investigation applies non-conventional extensions of the linear elastic fracture mechanics, known as notch mechanics, for estimating the fatigue limit of Additively Manufactured (AMed) lattice structures. Being based on local stress field analysis, notch mechanics allows the estimation of the fatigue limit of lattice structures by considering them as defective and notched materials and by using a fatigue design tool (the so-called Atzori–Lazzarin–Meneghetti, ALM, diagram) valid for multiaxial local stresses. Theoretical estimations are validated against experimental data coming from two batches of AMed lightweight A205 aluminium alloy lattice structures having Body Centered Cubic (BCC) and diamond Unit Cells (UCs), respectively. The theoretical fatigue limits estimated by using the multiaxial ALM diagram shows errors below 15% compared to the experimental results.
