Abstract

Despite considerable bioactivity of bioactive ceramics such as hydroxyapatite, their poor mechanical properties have hindered their clinical applications. It is expected that the incorporation of a ceramic reinforcement with reduced grain size below 100 nm improves their properties. The aim of this work was fabrication, characterization, and bioactivity evaluation of a novel hydroxyapatite–forsterite–bioglass composite nanopowder via a sol–gel method. Results showed that suitable temperature for calcination was 600°C and the particle size was about 60–70 nm. During immersion in simulated body fluid, apatite layer was formed. It seems that prepared composite nanopowder could be a good candidate for biomedical applications.
