Strength prediction of composite single lap joints using the critical longitudinal strain criterion and a meshless method
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract This work aims to test a meshless method, the Radial Point Interpolation Method (RPIM), in a multi material structure where the composite substrates are treated as an anisotropic material, and the adhesive as an isotropic material. The strength prediction is accomplished by the continuum mechanics-based Critical Longitudinal Strain (CLS) criterion. A stress and strain analysis showed that the RPIM can be used successfully in this type of structure. The strength predictions were accurate for the most brittle adhesive, Araldite® AV138, but the CLS criterion showed some limitations for the other adhesives tested, the moderately ductile Araldite® 2015 and the very ductile Sikaforce® 7888. It was also shown that the CLS criterion is discretization independent.
