The effect of rGO/SiO2 hybrid filler on Lap shear strength of Polyurethane adhesive having Poly (dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS)
Source abstract
Abstract
The Polyurethane (PU) nanocomposite adhesive having Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with 0.25 wt%, 0.50 wt%, and 1.0 wt% of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO)/Silica (SiO 2) as hybrid nanofillers was prepared using in situ polymerisation method. The morphology, phase separation, and thermal stability of the PU-PDMS nanocomposite adhesive with these fillers were analysed by FESEM (Field emission scanning electron microscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffractometer), and TGA (Thermogravimetric analysis), respectively. The functional group present in the PU-PDMS nanocomposite adhesive with rGO/SiO 2 hybrid nanofillers was determined by FTIR (Fourier transform infrared). The effect of the concentration of rGO/SiO 2 hybrid nanofillers in PU-PDMS neat adhesive on the shear strength of single lap aluminium adherends joints was examined. The thermal stability and lap shear strength were increased as the concentration of the rGO/SiO 2 hybrid nanofillers in the PU-PDMS adhesive increased up to 1.0 wt%. The ideal thickness of the adhesive layer for the neat PU-PDMS adhesive in lap shear joints was determined to be 0.5 mm. The shear strength of PU-PDMS nanocomposite adhesive with 1.0 wt% of rGO/SiO 2 hybrid filler was 249 % more than the neat PU-PDMS adhesives.
