Corresponding states correlation for the surface tension of alkanes
Source abstract
Abstract
The temperature dependence of the surface tension for metals has been examined, based on phenomenological scaling and consideration of the law of corresponding states. A set of reduced coordinates, σ * - T * , where σ * is the reduced surface tension and T * is the reduced temperature for the prediction of the surface tension of metals, is introduced. The new reduced coordinates result in a single curve for the surface tension of metals as a function of temperature. In the correlation, melting temperature, T m , is applied as the corresponding temperature for different metals, resulting in promising correlation. The relationship in which T * is a reduced temperature at a scaled distance from the boiling point, Tb, is used accurately for molten cobalt, nickel, and iron over an extensive range of temperature. It is shown that σ * varies linearly with T * with equation σ * = a + bT * , where a and b are temperature-independent constants. With this relationship, the predicted values of the surface tension of melts are in good agreement with experimental ones.
