Abstract

Photocatalytic oxidation is a favorable method for eliminating hard-to-degrade organic pollutants from water bodies due to its eco-friendliness and efficiency, as it does not consume chemical reagents. To make the process cost-effective, researchers aimed to develop photocatalysts with broad-spectrum light reactions, effective charge separation, and easy recoverability. Several composites, including barium carbonate doped barium calcium carbonate (BaCO3@ BaCa(CO3)2 and BaCO3@BaCa(CO3)2)Modified perlite composite, were prepared to achieve these objectives. The composites were characterized using various techniques, such as UV–Vis, XRD, EDS, and FESEM. The BaCO3@BaCa(CO3)2 Modified perlite composite showed the most promising results, with a photocatalytic removal of tetracycline (TC) reaching 90% in 120 min. The impact of photocatalyst dose, tetracycline concentration and pH was also investigated. Moreover, the effect of incorporating of BaCO3@BaCa(CO3)2 Modified perlite in to chitosan was investigated. The results showed the photocatalytic degradation rate constant was 1 × 10–2 min−1, which was significantly higher than that of BaCO3@BaCa(CO3)2 (4 × 10–3 min−1), indicating better redox ability due to increased light absorption range and strengthened separation of electron–hole pairs. Some mechanistic studies in the presence of scavengers were also investigated. The photodegradation occurred under visible light at ambient conditions, making it an eco-friendly method for removing TC from water. Overall, this study provides an efficient and innovative approach to design a system for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater.
