Effect of TiO2 on surface spins disorder of MgFe2O4 nanoparticles
Source abstract
Abstract
MgFe2O4 nanoparticles (NPs) and MgFe2O4/TiO2 nanocomposites (NCs) were synthesized via the sol–gel technique. XRD analysis confirmed the phase formation of MgFe2O4 with a cubic spinel structure. In MgFe2O4/TiO2 NCs, all three phases of TiO2 (anatase, brookite, and rutile) were observed. The average crystallite size of MgFe2O4 NPs with and without presence of TiO2 was found to be 36 and 22 nm, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy images revealed less agglomerated MgFe2O4 NPs in the TiO2 composite sample as compared to bare MgFe2O4 NPs. For both the samples, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis confirmed the presence of tetrahedral and octahedral metal–oxygen vibrational bands of MgFe2O4 NPs. The inclusion of TiO2 suppressed the saturation magnetization of MgFe2O4 NPs due to the reduction of the average crystallite size. The zero field cooled magnetization curve was fitted by using Neel–Brown relaxation model and a lower value of effective anisotropic constant (Keff) for MgFe2O4/TiO2 NCs as compared to that of MgFe2O4 NPs, which is attributed to the reduced surface spins disorder in the TiO2 composite NPs. Kneller’s law fit yielded blocking temperature (TB) of 515 and 327 K for MgFe2O4 NPs and MgFe2O4/TiO2 NCs, respectively. The lower value of TB for MgFe2O4/TiO2 NCs corresponds to the smaller average crystallite size. The fitting parameters of the Kneller’s and modified-Bloch’s law indicate weak magnetic exchange coupling and inter-particle interactions in MgFe2O4/TiO2 NCs. In summary, MgFe2O4/TiO2 NCs showed less agglomerated NPs with reduced surface spins disorder and weak inter-particle interactions as compared to bare MgFe2O4 NPs, which can be helpful in various magnetic applications.
