Abstract

We report on the correlation between surface features during laser-induced surface nanostructuring and plasma parameters excited on the surface of different metals using high repetition rate femtosecond pulses. We analyze the plasma emission spectra by calculating the electron density and temperature at conditions that correspond to the formation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) and nanospikes on the surface of the Ti and Ni targets. We show that high concentration and temperature of free electrons can cause the variation of the quality of LIPSS produced at ambient conditions. Parameters of the induced plasma were calculated for singly charged Ni and doubly charged Ti ions.
