Abstract

Environmental contamination caused by industrial dyes and nitro compounds has become a growing concern due to their negative effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems, due to their stability in water and harmful effects to health. This study developed the use of a ternary system composed of layered double hydroxide (LDH), gold/palladium (AuPd) bimetallic catalyst and cyclodextrins (CD) to photo-decompose a model dye (methyl orange) and photo-reduce a model nitro-compound (nitrobenzene). The ternary catalysts were characterized by powder X ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopies, and X rays photoelectron spectroscopy. The combined use of cyclodextrins, citrate and LDH partially influenced the stability of gold nanoparticles and the reduction of Pd2+. Additionally, beta-hydroxypropylated-CD at a molar ratio of CD:Pd = 5:1 as well as the CuAl LDH as support were crucial for achieving optimal catalytic results: 93.6% of dye removal (120 min, at 40 °C) and 98.5% of nitroaromatic reduction (180 min, at room-temperature) under substrate:reductant ratio as low as 1:2.5. The enhanced catalytic activity exhibited by the Ausingle bondPd NP supported on Cu/Al LDH demonstrated a remarkable synergy between the two noble metals (some alloy effects) and the copper-containing LDH support.
