Abstract

Soil composition can regulate the interaction between microplastics and organic pollutants, thereby affecting their environmental behaviors. However, little research has focused on the role of clay minerals on the adsorption behavior of organic pollutants by microplastics. This study investigated the influence of typical clay minerals, montmorillonite and kaolinite, on the adsorption of thiacloprid by three cellulose acetate (CA) microplastics (commercial powder, derived from clothing fibers and derived from filter fiber), and clarified their differences from the molecular perspective. The results showed that the presence of montmorillonite and kaolinite minerals in the soil significantly enhanced the adsorption of thiacloprid on commercial powder CA and microplastics derived from clothing fiber, while inhibited that on microplastics derived from filter fiber, indicating that the adsorption process was controlled by both clay minerals and microplastics. The adsorption isotherms and thermodynamics results demonstrated that the adsorption of thiacloprid was dominated by physical adsorption. Clay minerals could provide adsorption sites for thiacloprid, and also occupy the adsorption sites on microplastics through van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding and polar interactions. In addition, two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy and theoretical calculation demonstrated that thiacloprid was preferentially adsorbed on the Si O surface of clay minerals, of which montmorillonite provided more effective adsorption sites than kaolinite. This study provides a theoretical basis for understanding the environmental behavior of microplastics and organic pollutants in soil.
