Abstract

A green geopolymer with a high flexural strength was prepared using spodumene flotation tailings (SFT) and metakaolin (MK) through alkali activation to expand the usage possibility of tailings. Na 2O·xSiO 2 (x = modulus) solution was used as activator and the influence of various factors on the flexural strength of geopolymer was analyzed. The results show that the flexural strength of geopolymer prepared with single MK or SFT as raw material is lower than 15 MPa, while that of geopolymer combined with MK and SFT can reach 30 MPa (prepared using a sodium silicate solution with a modulus of 3.3 and a mass concentration of 40% as activator). SFT can react with Na 2O·xSiO 2 (x = 3.3, Na/Si molar ratio was 2:3.3) solution to form new chemical bonds and filamentous/strip materials, which is one of the most important reasons for the improved flexural strength of geopolymer.
