Abstract

Abstract The sequestration of Cs on nanotunnel structured Na-palygorskite was investigated under aerobic conditions combining batch adsorption and spectroscopic approaches. The effects of pH, background electrolyte, humic acid (HA) and temperature on Cs sequestration were examined. Palygorskite showed superior sequestration performance for Cs compared with other common minerals without structural tunnels. The sequestration of Cs on palygorskite was dependent greatly on ionic strength and slightly on pH, the adsorbed Cs was hardly desorbed by deionized water but NH4Cl solution, indicating that the sequestration of Cs+ on Na-palygorskite was mainly dominated by ion exchange, and the size-matched nanotunnel structure of palygorskite played a significant role in Cs sequestration. Coexisting alkali metal ions showed great influence on Cs sequestration, and potassium with a larger size strongly competed with Cs due to the more notable steric hindrance. The addition of HA altered the path of Cs sequestration, when HA was introduced before Cs, the attachment of HA on surface inhibited Cs sequestration by blocking the access to the nanotunnels. These results are essential for understanding the environmental fate and risk of Cs and provide a basic reference for an effective sequestration remediation strategy for environmental Cs contaminants.
