Rheological study on influence of mineral composition on viscoelastic properties of clay
Source abstract
Abstract
Abstract Using an oscillating shear rheology experiment and zeta potential analysis to explore the influence of mineral composition on the viscoelastic properties of soil, three pure mineral clays, namely, kaolin, montmorillonite, and illite, and their mixed simulated clays were tested. The results showed that the influence of mineral composition on the viscoelastic properties was larger than the influence of other factors. The contribution of montmorillonite to the viscoelastic properties was much greater than that of kaolin or illite. The influence of the coefficient of montmorillonite on the viscoelasticity of the simulated soil decreased with increase of strain and water content. The zeta potential test results were consistent with theoretical analyses.
