Properties of mortars containing fine-ground cements

F. F. Lange, H. Moertel, V. Rudert

Abstract

Fine-ground cements, such as Mikrodur{reg_sign} have wider particle size distributions than ordinary cements. The wider distribution has a significant influence on the properties of resulting mortars. This phenomenon is commonly known as the filler effect. Silica-fume and fly ash usually are used as additives to the cement. They enhance mortar strength--by affecting microstructure--and durability. The present work demonstrates that it is possible to enhance mortar properties by blending them with Mikrodur, a fine blast-furnace-slag-based cement, which is characterized by its maximum particle size. Maximum particle size is the basis for the different available grades of Mikrodur. Each grade has a similar influence on mortar properties. Overall mortar properties are influenced by the grade and mass percentage of fine-ground cement used.
