Abstract

Inspired by the hair of blue tarantulas, B.-K. Hsiung and co-workers made a highly periodic structuralcolored material that shows consistent color from all viewing directions in article number 1600599.This finding overturns the conventional wisdom that non-iridescent color cannot be produced by long-range order photonic structures, opening new potential to mass produce new structural colors. Chiral MetasurfacesTuning the phase and amplitude response of achiral and chiral metasurfaces is a key operation in optical science and technology, since it lies at the heart of devices like wavefront shapers, beam steerers, and many others. In article number 1600732, the concept of ion intercalation is bridged from the domain of electrochemistry to that of photonics, paving the way for a new class of reconfigurable optical devices, by S. Zanotto and co-workers.Entering its second decade as a top tier materials science journal, Advanced Functional Materials reports breakthrough research in all aspects of materials science, including nanotechnology, chemistry, physics, and biology.
