Abstract

Laser-induced bubbles are utilized by Jianjun Chen, Qihuang Gong, and co-workers in article number 1600545 to widely tune surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs).Experimentally, a modulation depth of 18 dB below the critical pump intensity and a wavelength change of about Δλ = -200 nm for Δn = -0.333above the critical pump intensity are achieved. This large index variation brought about by the laser-induced bubbles can greatly decrease the difficulty in designing tunable plasmonic devices. Solar SailsSolar sails represent a novel space propulsion technology based on radiation pressure; however, steering and actuation typically require traditional propellants or fuel.In article number 1600668, Dakang Ma, Joseph Murray, and Jeremy N. Munday describe the use of a reflectivity control device based on a polymer dispersed liquid crystal, which enables propellant-less attitude control through reflectivity modulation via an applied voltage.Entering its second decade as a top tier materials science
