Abstract

The novel thermal sensor presented by Volker Schnabel, Ralph Spolenak and co-workers (article number 1800656) is based on a lossy Gires–Trounois interferometer configuration and provides direct optical feedback from a functional transition-metal-nitride coating. The sensor can be used at high temperatures (1000 °C), making it ideal for application in turbines. This sensor concept can be easily adapted to other applications, opening up new possibilities for engineering low footprint devices, capable to detect and track local property changes in real-time.
