Abstract

A single-mode laser is obtained by H. D. Sun and co-workers from coupled whispering gallery mode fiber lasers (two bright rings) via the Vernier effect under optical excitation (green light). Application of the coupled structure for refractive index sensing of ethanol solution (molecules), as shown on page 220, exhibits a doubled sensitivity compared with the single structure. The background shows the magnetic field distribution of a typical coupled cavity.
