Advanced Optical Materials· Volume 4· Issue 1

Abstract

Hybrid optical fibers represent a new category of optical fiber consisting of materials which are traditionally not used in fiber optics. These multimaterial structures have led to photonic devices with unprecedented properties, having opened up new directions for fiber optics. M. A. Schmidt and co-workers review the latest advances in this new direction on page 13. The image, created by Ron Spittel, illustrates the various materials and geometries that can be included in optical fibers.
