Multimodal Haptic Perception Through Synergistic Nanocomposite Sensor Arrays

Amos Bardea, Fernando Patolsky

Abstract

ABSTRACT We report a multimodal haptic sensing paradigm based on a synergistic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) doped with nickel nanoparticles (NiNPs), integrated into a vertical‐via wearable architecture. Unlike conventional unimodal sensors, this platform achieves simultaneous discrimination of tactile, thermal, and low intensity magnetic fields stimuli within a single active layer. A parallel resistive network model is implemented, where localized conductive pathways function as dominant shunts to enhance sensitivity. Analytical results demonstrate that mechanical contact induces an 88% reduction in localized resistivity (1.52 ± 0.22 MΩ·cm), underscores the macroscopic homogeneity of the hybrid filler network. The sensor exhibits a superior Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) response (Temperature Coefficient of Resistance‐TCR: −0.0165°C −1 ) with a 56% resistance shift, while NiNPs enable detection of low magnetic fields (∼100 G) via an 80% positive magnetoresistance (PMR) effect. A multi‐tiered decoupling strategy mitigates signal cross‐talk through distinct physical signatures: magnetic stimuli are isolated by PMR polarity, while tactile and thermal responses are differentiated by unique temporal dynamics and current magnitudes (µA to nA). Validated through a wearable glove interface, this architecture establishes a benchmark for multidimensional haptic perception, offering transformative potential for autonomous robotics, advanced prosthetics, and high‐fidelity human‐machine interaction in immersive environments.
