Stainless steel in automobiles

J.M. Hunt

Abstract

To satisfy consumers and to meet increasingly more stringent government requirements, auto manufacturers now offer longer warranties and require longer life and better reliability. Designers are forced to look more closely at the longevity and life cycle of the materials they choose. Therefore, designers and engineers take advantage of the many attributes of stainless steel and other advanced alloys. These specialty materials are used in functional areas where fabricability, durability, and resistance to heat and corrosion are essential. Stainless steel is also chosen when corrosion resistance and appearance are needed in applications such as trim items.
