Trends in automotive steel
Source abstract
Abstract
For more than 100 years, steel has been basic to the automotive industry. Recently, the steel industry developed an optimized automotive steel structure that is 24% lighter, 34% stronger, and $154 less expensive than traditional auto body structures on the road today. And top executives in the auto industry and the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) cite steel as the main material for the Supercar of the future. PNGV is the joint effort of the US government and the Big Three automobile manufacturers to develop technologies for a new generation of cars that provide as much as three times the fuel efficiency of today`s typical family sedan, yet do not sacrifice performance, safety, or affordability.
