Abstract

Nucleation of intermediate phases can severely limit the kinetics of solid-state hydrogen storage reactions in complex metal hydrides. In article number 1600803, Brandon Wood and co-workers combine experiment and theory to show how nanoconfinement can suppress intermediates in the Li3N/[LiNH2 + 2 LiH] system to dramatically improve performance. This occurs as penalties associated with internal “nanointerfaces” favor fewer coexisting phases within the particles.
