Abstract

In article number 1804801, Artemios Karvounis and co-workers report on the first experimental realization of a metamaterial electrostrictor. They demonstrate that an all-dielectric, nanomechanical metamaterial can be deformed under the application of an electric field and can serve as an electro-optic modulator with effective electrostriction and electro-optic coefficients of the order of 10−13 m2 V−2 and 10−6 m V−1, respectively.
