Abstract

An inline sensing system for degradation of polyester resins is reported by Wolfgang Binder and co-workers in article number 2100068, which is able to detect thermal degradation within poly(ester imide) resins, widely used as a coating material for copper wires in electric motors. Trifluoroacetyl-functionalized stilbenes act as sensor molecules, detecting the release of alcoholic degradation products by solid-state fluorescence spectroscopy, due to emission shifts induced by the hemiacetal formation, thus allowing monitoring of long-term degradation of the PEI resins.
