Seedcoat Suture Tessellation: Amplifying Strength, Toughness, and Auxeticity via Wavy Sutural Tessellation in Plant Seedcoats (Adv. Mater. 36/2018)
Source abstract
Abstract
Inspired by the wavy sutural tessellations in the seed coats of flowering plants, in article number 1800579, Yaning Li and co-workers explore a new design concept for mutually amplifying strength and toughness in tiled composites. By tuning the waviness and material contrast of the suture tessellation, the composites can also exhibit negative Poisson's ratio. This concept is proved via mechanical experiments on 3D-printed two-phase prototypes.
