Abstract

Stable hexagonal non-close-packed (ncp) gold nanowires with a diameter of about 50 nm and aspect ratios of well over 400 are fabricated by Hyunjung Shin and co-workers, as described in article number 1706261. Single-crystalline gold nanowires are grown in the confined system of nanotubular TiO2 arrays, and some of them are demonstrated to have 6-fold rotational symmetry, observed by TEM tilting experiments. Nucleation events of very small face-centered cubic or ncp Au seeds are expected to occur on the inner surfaces of the TiO2 nanotubes and subsequently grow by a diffusion-limited process.
