Abstract

At different size scales, the Earth and silica-coated nanoparticles possess similar structure and properties. On p. 1182 Andrés Guerrero-Martínez, Luis Liz-Marzán and co-workers present recent progress in the field of silica-coated nanomaterials. The cover image reflects the physical properties (magnetic, catalytic, and photophysical, with the sun as a light source) of the Earth, in combination with its outer bio-shell.
