In‐Situ Fabrication of Freestanding Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotube–Silicate Composite Hex Nuts
Source abstract
Abstract
Freestanding “hex nuts” composed of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)–silicate composite (see Figure) have been fabricated from mats of silica-coated SWNTs using a novel dissolution/regrowth process. This approach simultaneously generates large numbers of composites with well-defined shapes and uniform dimensions. Discrete steps of this fabrication process are discussed.

27. When SWNTs are suspended in water by a surfactant they can be suspended both as individual tubes or as bundles surrounded by a surfactant micelle. Although the present method suspends a large number of SWNTs as individuals no special effort was made to separate individual SWNTs from any suspended bundles. Consequently the results described herein include both silica‐coated individual tubes and silica‐coated bundles.
