Abstract

A molecular field-effect switch (FES) employing zinc biladienone as the active element is reported (see figure). The switching mechanism is investigated and a new FES switching mechanism is proposed in which the molecules separate from the electrodes and their molecular orientation changes when a gate voltage is applied.

36. For example in field‐emission displays it is known that as the front edge of the cathode element becomes sharper higher emission effects can be obtained with smaller applied voltages.
37. It has been found that the roughness of the serrations in a metal surface made by evaporation cannot be ignored in nanoscale devices. In the case of gold surfaces the root–mean–square (RMS) roughness is ca. 1.4 nm: M. S. Islam Z. Li S.‐C. Chang D. A. A. Ohlberg D. R. Stewart S. Y. Wang R. S. 38. In the drain current vs. drain–source voltage (Id–Vds) curve of the biladienone switch without gate voltage applied two negative differential resistance curves showed the symmetry of positive‐ and negative‐bias voltage by a reversal of polarization. When negative gate voltage is applied two additional negative differential resistance (NDR) peaks appeared in the lower bias‐voltage region. When positive gate voltage is applied no NDR peaks were observed. E. Matsui N. N. Matsuzawa S. Moriya T. Sasaki T. Hatazawa K. Kita T. Mizutani unpublished.
