Suppression of Energy‐Transfer Between Conjugated Polymers in a Ternary Blend Identified Using Scanning Near‐Field Optical Microscopy
Source abstract
Abstract
Scanning near-field optical microscopy (see figure) has been employed to study energy transfer within a ternary blend of the conjugated polymers poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene) (F8), poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-alt-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT), and the saturated polymer poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). Although the morphology of such phase-separated blends resembles that of simple binary systems composed of a saturated and a unsaturated polymer, it was found that energy transfer between F8 and F8BT is significantly hindered by the diluting effect of the PMMA.

38. The fluorescence quantum efficiency (Φ) is defined as Φ = τobs/τrad where τobsis the observed fluorescence decay lifetime and τradis the natural radiative decay lifetime. If we neglect possible electronic interactions between polymer molecules and thus assume that the intrinsic radiative lifetime of the molecule is unchanged by dilution (i.e. changes only occur to the nonradiative decay rate) then changes in the observed decay lifetime are directly proportional to changes in the fluorescence quantum efficiency. We find that the fluorescence decay lifetime of a pure film of F8BT is 1.1 ns which increases by ca. 60 % to 1.8 ns when it is diluted into a PMMA thin film (at a concentration of 2 % by mass). The decay lifetime of F8 is ca. 320 ps in a pure thin film which increases by around 6 % to 340 ps when diluted (also at 2 % by mass) into PMMA. This suggests that the fluorescence quantum efficiency of F8BT increases strongly when diluted into PMMA however the F8 quantum efficiency is much less sensitive to PMMA dilution.
