Abstract

Precursors to high‐performance ceramics, based on poly(silylene)diacetylene‐metal oxide composites see figure, are reported. On thermal conversion under nitrogen, carboreduction and nitridation of the encapsulated metal oxide take place, resulting in the formation of SiC‐metal nitride ceramics with well‐defined composition profiles. magnified image

24. Synthesis of the precursor: in a typical experiment a precursor material was formed by dispersing 0.3 g of a finely divided TiO2powder (particle size: <350 mesh) in 25 ml of a solution of 0.2 g of poly[ (dimethylsilylene)diacetylene] in tetrahydrofuran. The molar ratio TiO2:polymer was based on the following reaction 1 a + 2 TiO2N2SiC + 2 TiN + 4 CO that is 1:2 (theoretical ceramic yield: 61.7%). The mixture was ultrasonicated for 0.5 h to form a suspension and while stirring the solvent was evaporated in vacuo yielding a solid residue.
25. The experiments were performed with a SEM Cambridge Stereocan 360 equipped with a EDS Link AN 10000 microanalyzer. Carbon or nitrogen cannot be detected.
26. Pyrolysis experiments were carried out on weighed samples (0.1 to 1 g) of the polymer‐metal oxide composite which were heated in an alumina tube (length: 100 cm diameter: 3 cm) fitted with glass taps to allow the connection with a vacuum line. The nitrogen flow was maintained at about 60 ml min−1. Experiments were performed in an Eurotherm or Carbolite furnace (heating rate: 10°C min−1up to 1400°C then 20 min at 1400°C). Ceramic yield = (weight of the pyrolysis residue x 100): (weight of the pyrolysis charge).
27. X‐ray powder diffraction (XRD) pattern was measured with a Philips diffractometer employing Cu‐Kα2radiation.

31. Simultaneous TGA and TDA analyses were performed in a stream of N2(60 ml min−1) with a Netzsch STA thermogravimetric analyzer interfaced with an Anagas 200 Delsi‐Nermag mass spectrometer (heating rate: 10°C min−1). TGA and TDA measurements were conducted with the Netzsch SW‐STA‐311.001 software on a HP 9000‐300 computer.
