Fullerene‐like nanocrystals of tungsten disulfide

Polyhedral structures akin to fullerenes, some exhibiting ‘Russian doll’‐type structures, have recently been prepared in layered chalcogenide materials such as WS₂, (see figure). The materials are expected to exhibit novel electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. The method of producing the structures is presented, and the possibility of extending the approach to high‐T_c superconductors is discussed. magnified image
