Polymerization of methyltrioxorhenium(VII) organometallic oxides as precursors for oxide ceramics
Source abstract
Abstract
Polymerization by acid‐induced aggregation, a process that was previously unknown in organometallic chemistry, is shown to occur in methyltrioxorhenium(VII). The resulting polymer, an oxide ceramic precursor, undergoes an unusual depolymerization: in the weeks following compression of a pellet of the polymer, the surface becomes covered with large single crystals of the monomer (see figure). This is the first example of the specific crystallization of a metal‐organic compound from the solid state by application of pressure. magnified image

16. A solution of 5.00 g (2.0 mmol) of 1 [4b] in roughly 50 mL of high‐purity water is sealed in a round‐bottomed flask or in a Teflon bomb and heated to − 70°C while being stirred. The gold‐colored fine‐crystalline precipitate is filtered off washed first with water and then with absolute solvents (THF diethyl ether n‐pentane) and finally dried in high vacuum. This gives a yield of 3.8 g (70 %) 3. In order to increase the crystallinity of 3 the reaction temperature is drastically reduced and as described above a dilute aqueous solution of 1 is stirred for roughly 10 days at 30‐35°C. Many complete analyses that agree with each other are available. The pH of the dilute aqueous solution decreases from initially 4.3 to ‐1.3 (formation of HReO4). It is also possible to isolate up to 0.5% (CH3)4Re2O4depending on the reaction temperature characterized by IR mass spectrometry and X‐ray data. This by‐product which is produced in only insignificant quantities is not included in Equation lb. However in fact it cannot be neglected completely because of the transfer of methyl groups that occurs in water.

26. The diffraction patterns were measured on a Guinier diffractometer 642 or 644 (with a heating unit) supplied by Huber with a Ge monochromator (λ = 154.056 pm). The measured data were collected with counting times and step widths of 10 s 0.01° (step‐scanning method; MTO Fig. 2 bottom) 5 s 0.005° (3 Fig. 2 center) and 2 s 0.002° (ReO3 Fig. 2 top) or 5s 0.01° (temperature scan Fig. 4). All three compounds were studied in the form of flat samples 1 being held between two pieces of thin cling film because it is so volatile. For the temperature measurements the samples were scaled in a quartz capillary. Crystal data of 1: space group: Cmc2 (Int.
