Hybrid Opals: Transparent Hybrid Opals with Unexpected Strong Resonance‐Enhanced Photothermal Energy Conversion (Adv. Mater. 2/2021)
Source abstract
Abstract
In article number 2004732, Michael R. Bockstaller, George Fytas, and co-workers demonstrate an order-of-magnitude amplification of optical absorption in low-contrast opals formed by the self-assembly of polymer-tethered nanoparticles. The amplification is shown to be caused by the “slow photons effect” and to induce rapid “melting” of the opal films even in the absence of visible absorption. This work points to novel opportunities for tailoring light–matter interactions in hybrid materials by deliberate engineering of the molecular structure of polymer chains at interfaces.
