Abstract

On page 10142, D. Floreano and co-workers demonstrate a variable-stiffness fiber with self-healing capabilities based on low-melting-point alloys and silicone. The fiber can be soft and adaptable enough to the human body, but also rigid enough to withstand loads and keep a specific shape; it can become >700 times softer and >400 times more deformable when heated above the alloy's melting temperature.
