Stepwise Formation of Ultrathin Films of a Titanium (Hydr)Oxide by Polyelectrolyte-Assisted Adsorption
Source abstract
Abstract
Ultrathin films of titanium (hydr)oxide with precise control over film thickness (via number of cycles) can be prepared by the alternate adsorption of an organic polyelectrolyte and a titanium lactate complex, followed by calcination. Thereafter, the layer appears to be composed of nanometer-sized particles with a fused nodular morphology. The Figure shows a cross-sectional SEM of the final product on silicon.

47. Ellipsometric measurements were obtained on a Rudolph AutoEL-III automatic ellipsometer assuming a refractive index for the multilayers before and after calcination of 1.80 and 2.10, respectively. These indexes were representative of values obtained experimentally on films greater than 60 nm in thickness.
48. To ensure that both sides of the quartz slide were coated evenly, the substrate was coated by dipping into the component solutions, rather than by dripping.

50. XPS was performed using a Scienta ESCA300 (Uppsala, Sweden) with monochromatic Al Kα X-rays and at a working pressure of 10-9 mbar. High-resolution spectra were collected with a pass energy of 150 eV (0.1 eV steps) and at a takeoff angle between the surface of the sample and the detector of either 15 or 90°, as noted.
51. A value of 221 cm/Ω mol was obtained for the molar conductance, close to that expected for a 2:1 complex (230-270 cm/Ω mol) and much higher than that expected for a 1:1 complex (110-140 cm/Ω mol). Assuming that the compound was a 2:1 complex, freezing-point depression measurements gave an average molecular weight of 320 ± 30 g/mol, within experimental error of 294.12 g/mol, expected from the molecular formula. 52. SEM graphs were obtained on a Hitachi S-4700 field emission SEM at an accelerating voltage of 2 kV using the upper secondary electron detector (through-the-lens). Samples were uncoated and mounted on aluminum stubs.
