Abstract

Preparation of water-filled silicone nanocapsules of controlled size is reported. Catanionic vesicles are used as templates for tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4H) crosslinking reactions inside their bilayers. Various characterization techniques confirmed the synthesis of nonporous, impermeable, highly crosslinked, hollow spheres about 100 nm in diameter.

33. We are currently testing several methods to examine this. Among these is the entrapment of a water‐soluble red dye which should allow one to quantitatively test the impermeability of the polymer shell. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements on freeze‐dried capsules will also be carried out to see if the water‐melting‐point peak appears even after intensive vacuum drying.
