Abstract

Crystalline films of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum(III) (Alq) have been grown on poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) substrates. The nucleating ability of the PTFE substrate, which relies on a specific molecular structure, is discussed. The Figure shows the film morphology of a 15 nm Alq film deposited onto an oriented PTFE substrate at 100 °C. The scale bar corresponds to 1 μm.

21. As reported in reference [4] the α polymorph of Alq crystallizes in a P-1 triclinic structure with a = 0.626 nm, b = 1.29 nm, c = 1.47 nm, α = 109.7°, β = 89.7°, and γ = 97.7°.
22. Due to the small crystal thickness, diffraction spots are elongated along the beam direction (zone axis). It results that reflections belonging to different layers of the same zone can simultaneously be observed. See for instance: T. Kobayashi, in Organic Crystals (Eds: H. C. Freyhardt, G. Müller), Springer Verlag, Berlin 1991, p. 14.
23. We used the attachement energy calculation module of the Cerius2 software to evaluate the crystal growth morphology. In the absence of relevant coulombic charges for the Alq molecule in the crystal, only van der Waals interactions have been taken into account.
