Abstract

Starting from neutral “pro-ionomeric” diblock copolymers, photoluminescent benzobis(imidazolium) (BBI) dihalide salts are used to effect anion metathesis, affording fluorescent block ionomers in a single step. In aqueous media, the ionomers self-assemble into either core- or shell-crosslinked micellular structures, depending on the copolymer and BBI used (see figure).

23. The methodology appears to be broadly applicable. For example combination of 1‐methyl‐3‐phenylbenzimidazolium iodide with pro‐ ionomer1also afforded micelles (see Supporting Information).

30. The ratios of monomer residues obtained via NMR spectroscopy were used to calculate the BBI salt loadings for AM (e.g SO3–CH2–CH3 δ = 4.18 ppm in CDCl3).
31. Investigations examining the relationship between molecular weight of the pro‐ionomers and the structure of its respective micelles are underway and will be reported in due course.
32. Samples prepared under more dilute concentrations (ca. 0.1 wt %) afforded micelles with similar average diameters as those described above although fewer micelles per unit area were observed as expected. Furthemore at lower concentrations the TEM images of micelles formed from5appeared to have a lower occurance of clusters.
33. Graphic representations of idealized micelle structures are provided (see Supporting Information).
34. To further support the formation of micelles as opposed to other structures TEM samples were stained with OsO4and imaged as described above. These images showed only single stained regions as opposed to bilayer formation which would be expected if their structures were vesicular (see Supporting Information).
