Abstract

Stimuli-responsive smart photodynamic agents are highly desirable for photodynamic therapy. In article number 1802808, Daishun Ling and co-workers report tumor-pH-sensitive photodynamic nanoagents composed of self-assembled photosensitizer-grafted pH-responsive polymeric ligands and upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs). The nanoagents are self-quenched in physiological pH conditions. In a mild acidic tumor environment, they can be efficiently internalized by tumor cells due to surface charge reversal, and further become disassembled into well-dispersed nanoparticles in intracellular tumor pH value, resulting in the UCNP-mediated activation of photosensitizers by near-infrared light.
